‘Tis the season to celebrate our Lord’s birth. As we prepare for the twenty-fifth of December, let’s make sure our classes are ready to celebrate. In this series, may it to remind us to give our Lord and Savior twelve gifts this Christmas. In Part 1, I asked how you would fill in the first verse (for a YouTube of the original song to inspire you, press the link). Here is what I offered there:
On the first day of Christmas, my Sunday School class gave to Christ…Love of God, neighbors, and self.
How would you complete the second verse?
On the second day of Christmas, my Sunday School class gave to Christ…
There are many ways to complete the verse. Why not make the verse an invitation? Why not respond with commitment? Why not commit your response to Christ and to each other? Make Christmas special by giving Jesus twelve birthday presents this year!
Here is how I would respond to today’s verse:
A great start of a new class.
That would help fulfill the Great Commission of our Lord in Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV):
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
How could you and your class show your love for Christ this year by starting a new class? Teacher, begin by training an apprentice. Multiply yourself into another person. Prepare him/her for the opportunity to teach and lead a new class. Take him/her with you to make a visit. Ask him/her with you to carry out plans for a class fellowship or project. Help him/her study and prepare to teach. Remember Paul’s admonition to Timothy (2 Timothy 2:2, NIV):
And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.
Talk about the people who can be reached. Talk about the leaders who can be trained through the start of a new class. Point to the workers who will be sent out into the harvest. Talk about the care and ministry that will be provided. Talk about the lives that will be changed, the disciples who will be made. Point to the fact that more classes can care for and reach more people.
Don’t just sing the words to today’s verse! Commit to it! Live it! Do it! Love Him. Share His love. Train apprentices. Start new classes. Make disciples. Be revolutionary!
