I was listening to the radio on my drive home. Matthew West’s song, The Motions, came on. Stop here and press the link and listen to the song (make sure your volume is not on mute). Then after listening to the song, read the rest of this blog post.
In the chorus, West makes a powerful statement followed by a haunting question (for the complete lyrics, press HERE).
I don’t want to go through the motions
I don’t want to go one more day
Without your all consuming passion inside of me
I don’t want to spend my whole life asking
What if I had given everything
Instead of going through the motions?
Knowing that West underwent career threatening vocal surgery in 2007, adds even more power to the song. Watch this VIDEO of the song and clips from his questions and hospital stay. (His surgery went well.)
My point in sharing this song is to challenge you to give God your all. He deserves our best. Be passionate in your Sunday School work. Work hard. Pray hard. Care. Don’t leave anything undone. Don’t look back with regret.
At the same time, make sure what you are doing is what God desires. Doing the wrong thing with passion and enthusiasm is still the wrong thing. In golf, chess, or Sunday School work, repeated practice does not make perfect. It only makes permanent. And practicing something wrong also makes it more difficult to make needed change later–for you and others.
Stop now and ask God to help you recognize what you need to do to give everything. Don’t go through the motions. Be revolutionary!
