This month, the Sunday School Leader blog will focus on evangelistic reaching and teaching through the Sunday School. To broaden the title of this post, the question that will be addressed is the following:
How can Sunday School help in leading lost friends, relatives, associates, and neighbors to Christ?
Back in the late 1980s, Andy Anderson of the Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources), discovered through research that lost people were more than one hundred times more likely to accept Jesus as Savior and Lord if they were part of a Sunday School class rather than only sitting in the sanctuary. That fact is still true today. There is something essential about studying God’s Word together in a small group that cares about each other and listens and responds to each others’ questions.
In an effort to address some of the many ways that Sunday School can help, here are a few of the ways blog posts will approach the subject:
- how Sunday School can encourage evangelistic relationships,
- planning evangelistic Sunday School events,
- organizing to pray for and follow up with guests, and
- teaching evangelistic lessons.
In the meantime, begin praying for lost friends by name. Spend time with them. Show you care for them. Invite them for a meal, fellowship, or project. Share your journey when appropriate. Invite them to class. Lead them to encounter God in His Word. Teach Jesus. Invite them to Jesus. Yes, Sunday School can help me with my lost friends!
