‘Tis the season to celebrate our Lord’s birth. As we prepare for the twenty-fifth of December, let’s make sure our classes are ready to celebrate. Let’s give our Lord and Savior twelve gifts this Christmas. How would you fill in the following first verse? (For a YouTube of the original song to inspire you, press the link.)
On the first day of Christmas, my Sunday School class gave to Christ…
There are many ways to complete the verse. Why not make the verse an invitation? Why not response with commitment? Why not commit to Christ and to each other your response? Make Christmas special by giving Jesus twelve birthday presents this year!
Here is how I would respond to today’s verse:
Love of God, neighbors, and self.
That would fulfill the Great Commandment of our Lord in Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV):
Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.
How could you and your class show your love for Christ this year? Could you read the Bible and pray daily? Could you work harder at living out the truth? Could you tell someone about Him?
How could you and your class show your love for others this year? Could you do random acts of kindness? Could you serve them? Could you invite them to your home for a meal? Could you invite them to a fun class fellowship or project? Could you organize the class to respond to needs and stresses of people in your circles of influence or your community?
Don’t just sing the words to today’s verse! Commit to it! Live it! Do it! Love Him. Share His love. Make disciples. Be revolutionary!
