It is the beginning of a new year, and many of us are making resolutions or commitments to do some things differently this year. Have you included your Sunday School class as one of your new year’s resolutions? Rarely does a Sunday School group improve on its own. At some point in time, the leader (you) makes a decision that your group is going to be better about ministering to each other, or to be an evangelistic group. In God’s Word, we see the resolution of one man to make a difference with his life…
For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord,
and to do it and to teach His statutes and rules in Israel. Ezra 7:10
For the month of January, we are featuring a daily post on the topic of being a better Bible teacher. Of all the things that we do in Sunday School, the essential value is for us to be people who live by the Book that God has written to us through human hands. The Holy Bible is a wonderful, incredible book! The Bible, not our thoughts or imaginations, is the focus of our study. To live as a follower of Christ, we must know what the Bible says. In other words, we need deep, insightful Bible study that engages not just heads of our group, but their hearts and their hands as well.

I want to encourage you to come here daily during the month of January and look for places where you can hone your skills, grow your heart, and put action to your study.
This first week, we are focusing on the personal study and preparation of the teacher. You, the teacher, are the leader and pacesetter of your group. The more prepared you are personally to lead your group in a study of God’s Word, the better the opportunity that your class will be engaged and growing as well.
We, the Sunday School directors of our 42 Southern Baptist state conventions, look forward to the 31 days as we learn and grow together to become leaders and disciplers in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Themes for upcoming weeks 2-4:
Week 2 – Preparing your group in Bible study
Week 3 – Teaching for content
Week 4 – Teaching for application
